SharePoint Conference Day 1 in the bag
Sunday night started off with me begging for a bed as my intended roommate's reservation got him a king sized bed. So I have ended up rooming with Dan Attis (thanks again Dan!).
Since then it's been a veritable Who's Who of SharePoint MVPs for me the last two days. Sunday night saw me drinking in the Crowne Plaza's bar with nearly two dozen different people, including Lawrence Liu. Fourteen of us broke away from the Crowne Plaza and off to a wine bar/restaurant called Purple where Lawrence treated us to a magnificent meal. After dinner it was back to the bar at the Crowne Plaza until they kicked us out.
The first day of the conference started with a keynote by Bill Gates, where he highlighted the importance of search and social computing in the enterprise. Brendon and I attempted to go to a session about using SharePoint Designer to create mashups, but the room was full and they weren't letting anyone else in. Brendon and I split up and he went on to hear Microsoft's architectural vision behind SharePointPedia while Dan and I listened to Arthur Brost of twentysix Consulting discuss custom list forms and field types. This was really an excellent presentation and well worth watching when it comes out on the web. The last session of the day for me was a recap of forms based authentication from the guys at SharePoint Solutions. While the audience seemed to find the presentation fascinating, I didn't actually see anything I didn't already know and I regret missing Andrew Connell's Web Content Management presentation.
After the event a truck-load of SharePoint MVPs and I wandered over to the private party hosted by Ted Pattison and Ascentium. Here I ate some crab cakes and mingled with the likes of Spence and Nick Swan. We hung out and talked shop for a bit then all the MVPs got up and left for the SharePoint MVP dinner hosted by Lawrence. I tried to weasel my way in but by the time my group of people go to the dinner, the restaurant was completely full. So about 8 of us (Chris Regan, Jason Medero, and a bunch of the UK MVPs) left and headed over to Kells Irish Pub for a few pints of Guinness and some food. We were even entertained by some live Irish folk songs. After much carousing and drinking, we all headed out and home.
